Tope Fishing in South Wales
onboard Lady Helen Penarth
A popular summer visitor, tope provide fast and exciting sport on light tackle
TOPE BAIT
Large mackerel baits presented as fillets or flappers work best
TOPE TACKLE
3 ft flowing traces of either heavy monofilament or wire are essential, with an 8/0 high quality hook (preferably barbless) and good quality heavy juty swivel at least 2/0 in size. A link should be used to attach your trace to main line, as this will allow the trace to be detached as soon as the fish is netted .This increases safety ,as tope are usually very lively on the boat .The remainder of the end tackle should be a simple running ledger with 2 beads and a link swivel to carry the weight. Rods and reels need to be of a good quality as these summer predators can test tackle to the limit. Uptiding is most popular and provides great sport
