TACKLE TIPS

TACKLE TIPS for fishing the Bristol Channel onboard Lady Helen

RODS ..Most popular by far in the Bristol Channel are uptiders,6-10oz casting weight being recommended for downtiding 30lb class rods are needed to handle 1lb plus lead to hold bottom in the strong tide run

REELS . Strong quality reels are required to have the best chance of landing potentially large fish such as rays, conger and smoothound in fast tide run conditions. The most popular being ABU 7000 range

WEIGHT .. For uptiding, Gemini leads are by far the best of the numerous sinker patterns available,8oz is the norm on all but the smallest tides. Downtiding requires much heavier leads to hold bottom, ranging from 12oz up to 2lb depending on tidal conditions

LINE .. Uptiding 18lb mainline linked to a 50lb shockleader are standard requirements. Downtiding 25-30lb line is the norm. Braid is now becoming very popular and has the advantage of being much thinner, offering less resistance in fast water

TERMINAL TACKLE .

For both uptide and downtide fishing flowing pennel rigs are widely used.

A strong crane type swivel,3 ft trace length of 30lb mono will handle most fish, heavier mono or wire will be needed when conger or tope fishing. A strong Gemini link clip should be attached to the end of the shockleader to allow for easy detachment of the trace, to aid fish unhooking and fast re baiting. A bead either side of a link swivel for weight attachment completes the end tackle. Booms can be used when uptiding, but in our experience ,simple end tackle makes for a stress free days fishing
